Introducing Privacy Boost — Optimism's First Privacy Offering

Introducing Privacy Boost — Optimism's First Privacy Offering

TL;DR: Privacy Boost is an enterprise privacy SDK and the first privacy offering for Optimism. Regulatory-friendly, high-performant, and composable. Now live on OP Mainnet, with priority support for OP Enterprise customers.

Onchain Privacy for Enterprise

Today, we are thrilled to unveil Privacy Boost, an onchain privacy SDK for enterprise — regulatory-friendly, high-performance, and composable. It is designed for real-world financial applications.

Privacy Boost enables applications to integrate private transfers and privacy-preserving DeFi workflows into public blockchains while preserving the values that traditional finance provides: private from the public, auditable by regulators.

Following a successful private beta with early access customers and a rigorous security audit by OpenZeppelin (view the audit report), Privacy Boost is now live on OP Mainnet as Mainnet Beta. We have also partnered with OP Enterprise to deliver practical onchain privacy solutions to enterprise customers.

This launch marks a new generation of regulatory-friendly onchain privacy: infrastructure designed not just for cryptographic theory, but for real-world financial systems.

The Missing Layer: Practical Privacy

Enterprise finance is moving onchain. The advent of stablecoins, the accelerated pace of real-world asset tokenization, and institutions deploying blockchain-native infrastructure all make that clear.

Yet when institutions build onchain applications today, they are forced into a false choice: expose all data transparently, or go fully opaque with existing privacy protocols. Neither works for them.

Full transparency means anyone can see everyone's balances and financial activities. Specifically, this creates the following frictions:

  • Enterprises and institutional participants cannot expose treasury movements, trading strategies, or portfolio positions to competitors and front-runners.
  • Consumer-facing apps (wallets, payment apps, DeFi platforms) cannot ship products where user balances, spending habits, and transaction history are publicly visible onchain.
  • Regulators increasingly mandate that blockchain applications protect users' personal and financial information onchain (e.g., GDPR and PDPC).

But full opacity creates legal frictions and draws regulatory scrutiny. There are many active cases where operators were indicted for running such protocols (Tornado Cash, etc.). This also conflicts with frameworks like EU MiCA. To operate crypto services while preserving privacy, you need certain ways to provide observability for regulators or supporting entities.

As the industry shifts from experimentation to production-grade infrastructure, we need a solution that sits in the middle (we call this practical privacy). What enterprises actually need.

What do enterprises actually need?

Working on OP Enterprise sales and meeting many enterprises firsthand, we found that what they need is an entirely new approach. Their requirements are fundamentally different. They need privacy, but it needs to be:

  • Traceable by regulators to remain regulatory-friendly.
  • Scalable to onboard their existing user base.
  • Composable with existing deep liquidity and their existing applicaitons.

We needed to recreate traditional finance's privacy model onchain: private from the public, visible to regulators — in a scalable, composable, and integrable form.

Introducing Privacy Boost

Privacy Boost is that infrastructure layer: a regulatory-friendly, high-performant, and composable. API/SDK that enables apps to integrate onchain privacy into real-world applications. Its architecture draws from proven privacy primitives, re-engineered for enterprise use. We combined ZK cryptography and TEEs to deliver on all four pillars simultaneously.

  • Regulatory readiness. Policy controls such as KYC-only environments, auditable views, and regulatory-aware configurations can be enforced within the TEE layer, without compromising core privacy guarantees or increasing users' privacy risk.
  • Up to thousands of TPS through TEE-assisted proving. TEE-assisted proof generation delivers sub-500ms latency and efficient ZK proof aggregation. TEEs also encrypt communications end-to-end, allowing users to securely relay transactions onchain. Depends on the underlying chain.
  • Composable through SDK. Privacy Boost deploys ZK contracts on existing EVM chains, allowing applications to leverage existing onchain liquidity. Apps can integrate privacy with our TS, Android, iOS, and Rust SDK.

This is the synthesis of years of core protocol engineering, applied to a practical problem. It reflects the same performance, correctness, and security standards we have upheld while working on Ethereum's core infrastructure.

The first privacy offering for Optimism

Privacy and enterprise are inseparable. Optimism is the ecosystem that has committed most deeply to enterprise adoption, with OP Mainnet as an enterprise launch pad and OP Enterprise as managed infrastructure for production deployments. With the OP Stack, Ethereum's scaling challenge has been addressed. What was missing was privacy. We built it.

Privacy Boost is the first privacy offering for the Optimism ecosystem, a partnership born from three years of working on the OP Stack as a core development team. This partnership spans the full Optimism product suite:

  • On OP Mainnet, Privacy Boost is live today. Any application building on OP Mainnet, Optimism's flagship network and the recommended starting point for enterprises, can now integrate private transfers and privacy-preserving workflows.
  • For OP Enterprise customers operating their own chains, Privacy Boost can be deployed directly onto their infrastructure with priority integration support. Whether you start on OP Mainnet or launch your own chain from day one, Privacy Boost is ready.

Together, the OP Stack handles scale and Privacy Boost handles privacy — completing the infrastructure stack enterprises need to build production-grade financial applications on Ethereum.

As we work with banks, fintechs, and institutional partners looking to move on-chain, privacy consistently comes up as a non-negotiable requirement. Privacy Boost checked every box: performance, regulatory readiness, seamless integration, and self-custody. That's why we chose to work with Sunnyside on the first privacy offering for the OP Stack.

What's Next

Privacy Boost is live on OP Mainnet and OP Sepolia, and is already being integrated with early partners across wallets, payment applications, chains, and institutional platforms. Here's what's coming:

  • More chains and partners. Over the coming weeks, we will expand to additional chains, announce new integration partners, and share case studies.
  • Privacy-preserving DeFi (Sepolia in June). Today's launch delivers private transfers, but it's the foundation. The next release will introduce private swaps, earn, and lending.
  • The privacy hub for all of DeFi. Our goal is to build a composable privacy layer embedded within the EVM ecosystems where DeFi already lives. Any protocol can plug in and offer its users privacy as a first-class feature.

This is the beginning of a broader shift toward real-world ready privacy on Ethereum. More to come. Onwards!
